This post is about the first home we attempted to build with Hansen and Horn. We've since terminated our contract with them, and are building a new house with Bedrock Builders. This post is kept for archival purposes. Read what happened ›

We’re building a house!

Hi everyone! We’re first time homeowners building a house in Noblesville, IN and we setup this blog for friends, family, and anyone else curious about the process. We hope to post pictures, walk-through videos, and our thoughts and challenges throughout the 4 to 5 months the build is expected to take.

Our new home
The home we’re building is a 2945 square foot, 4 bedroom 2.5 bath craftsman-style home with Indianapolis-area builders Hansen and Horn. It’s semi-custom; we started with one of their many, many floor plans (they don’t even list them all on their web site) and then modified the heck out of it. Most of the house — probably 60% to 70% of the square footage — was altered in some way to accommodate what we wanted. Check out more specs and floor plans.

Location
We’re in Noblesville, IN…that’s all you get! Actually, the home will be situated on a decent sized lot — not a huge lot, but one of the largest in this neighborhood — and will be across the street from the large common park. A giant field and a playground are just across the street, as well as a pool when it’s eventually built by the homeowner’s association.

The process
Three days ago, we handed over ernest money and signed a contract. In two days, we’ll make our third visit to the Hansen and Horn Design Center and make our final material and color selections. Everything from the flooring to the cabinets to the doorknobs to to the lighting will be selected on that day. We’ve already been there to make preliminary selections and make sure they’re able to do what we want, so that part of the process should go quickly. Once that’s all signed off on, we’ll hand over another (larger) check and they’ll begin construction as soon as all the building permits are in place.

Why build?
That’ll be a topic for a future post!
