Week 1: Foundation

Happy Labor Day! Hope everyone had the opportunity to do something fun this long weekend. We stopped by the construction site on our way back into town from visiting friends and family.

Since we checked it out last Monday, the biggest visible difference is the forms that have been put in place for the basement walls. They’ve also moved the sump pit to the correct location (we noticed it had been placed incorrectly last week), covered the bottom of the pit with gravel, and filled the basement with what appears to be Erector Sets from hell. You can see the steel reinforcement bits inside the wall forms…at least I think that’s what they are.

One thing I’m surprised about is that they dug all the way down under where our front porch will be and setup forms to box it in against the outside of the basement wall, even though there’s no basement area there. It will wind up being a 10×8 empty hole, as deep as the basement itself but with no access. Weird.

10×8 hole under the front porch? Sounds like a perfect spot to establish the man cave! Or a fall out shelter. It’s your house, do with it as you wish.
