A note from Bedrock about energy efficiency

Last week’s post got a lot of comments! Glad everyone’s enjoying the updates. One commenter in particular (posting as “checkingitout”) seemed concerned that our house was not going to be energy efficient, despite all the things we had noticed during construction that were done specifically for energy efficiency.

Week 8: Plumbing and electrical wrap up

Mechanical runs - hot and cold water, audio and network wiring

All electrical and plumbing work wrapped up this week. For the first time since construction began, the outside of the house did not change this week — everything’s been happening inside. I had a pre-drywall wak-through with Sean on Thursday and learned a couple things about energy-efficient construction.

Week 7: HVAC, roof, wiring

Gable trim pieces

This week we saw the exterior trim finished up, the furnace and HVAC ducts installed, shingles put on the roof, and some of the wiring and plumbing getting started. Lots of stuff is starting to happen all at once.

Week 6: Framing nearly complete

Framing nearly complete

Things are looking good! Framing’s almost done; Sean says it will finish on Monday. We’ve got the whole structure in place now, and can really get a sense of the space inside. Week 4: Basement slab

Basement slab

Nothing terribly exciting this week, but at least there was some progress. After two and a half weeks of bitterly cold temperatures, it finally rose above 20 degrees this week which allowed Bedrock to get the basement slab poured. Framing is going to start first thing on Monday!

Week 2: Foundation in place

Basement walls

Happy New Year! We took an opportunity on this clear but crisp day to go check out the progress on the house, and much to our surprise the slabs for the basement floor and garage had been poured.

Bedrock Groundbreaking & Hansen and Horn updates

Bedrock Builders groundbreaking

Earlier this week, ground was broken and footers poured for our new home. As I noted in the introduction to our new builder last week, things have moved quickly. We continue to be impressed with the Bedrock Builders team, and we love the look of our new neighborhood and lot.

A new home from Bedrock Builders

Bedrock Builders

Within the next week or so — if everything goes to plan and mother nature cooperates — ground will be broken on our second attempt at building our first home. Yes, that fast! After a terrible experience with the first builder we chose, we’ve designed a new home with local custom builder Bedrock Builders in a matter of just a couple weeks, and it’s going to be fantastic.

We’re starting over – goodbye Hansen and Horn

After much consideration, and with advice from our attorney and Realtor, we have decided to terminate our relationship with Hansen and Horn and walk away from the house.
