The situation

A lot has transpired over the past week, and the situation is deteriorating. Several people have asked about the post I wrote back in August with glowing praise for Hansen and Horn, and wonder if I still feel that way. Short answer: no. Long answer: it’s complicated.

No progress this week

Since framing finished up a week ago, there’s been no work done on the house. HVAC contractors are supposedly being scheduled. They’d better get this thing closed up before the hard weather hits.

Framing nearly complete

All wrapped up

Got a report from our construction supervisor today that framing was nearly complete, and when we stopped by today this is what we saw! Starting to actually look like a house now. There’s even some trim pieces going on the outside.

Week 9: Second floor going up

Entering the 9th week of construction, I stopped by the house today after work and the framers were still at it late into the day. The second floor walls are up; no roof yet. No pictures today either; this whole set-the-clocks-back-an-hour thing means that even if I escape work soon enough to get to the [...]

Still framing

After the work done to get the first floor framed in on October 21, nothing had happened until yesterday (October 29). I stopped by late after work; it was too dark to take pictures, but they were still working at 7:00 and it looked like the garage had been framed in and the second level floor joists were going in.

Framing in progress

Framing underway

I stopped by both Monday and Tuesday of this week and there was no activity, but then today (Wednesday) I arrived to see the entire first floor pretty much framed in. I got to the site at about 6:30pm and the crew was still there, packing up.

Week 7: Framing begins!

Framing begins

Believe it or not, framing started this week. We didn’t even know it had started until we drove up to the site while we were out and about today, hoping beyond hope that at least lumber had been delivered.

Explanation for delays

Today I met with Alan, the Hansen and Horn VP of Sales, regarding the delays on our house. I had expressed serious concerns in an email sent to H&H last week about our house not being done by the end of the year, which would have financial consequences for us because of the window we had locked in for our financing. Alan and I had an enlightening conversation.

Week 6: No progress

Another week, more nothing. We have meeting tomorrow with the Hansen and Horn VP of sales, I’m very interested to hear what their explanation is for the significant delays. For those keeping score, in addition to the three weeks we’ve waited here for framing to start, we also waited more than four weeks for groundbreaking to happen after our pre-construction meeting.

Week 5: No progress

Nothing has been done on the site in the past two weeks. Now entering the 6th week, we’re still waiting for framing, and can’t really get a good explanation as to why it can’t start yet. Several other Hansen and Horn customers have found this site and posted comments that they’re getting (or have gotten) [...]
